I made this ring design in response to the diamond, which I picked first. I loved this diamond because it is so unique. It is a grey opaque rose cut diamond. It is rectangularly shaped and is sizeable enough to be a statement piece. When you look at it in person you can see deep inside it. It is filled with interesting and beautiful characteristics which make it totally one of a kind. In the sunlight it sparkles as do all diamonds. It is durable enough to withstand daily wear. I carved the ring setting out of a chunk of wax. I carefully measured the dimensions of the diamond to be sure it would fit and carefully grooved out a hole to exactly fit the stone. Then I carved the wax around it to make a simply elegant ring. Next the wax was cast into solid 14k white gold. I picked white gold so that the color would match the highlights in the gemstone. After it was cast I polished the metal. Then I carefully set the diamond by hammering the metal down along its edge. I carefully used a tiny metal chasing tool and a hammer to tap the metal into place. I did not want to hit the stone with the tools. When it was secure I polished the ring further but not too much. I still wanted it to look handmade. I like the little hammer and file marks that show that it was actually made my hand. They are part of the piece's story. Now the ring is ready to go to its new home. It can be a non traditional engagement for the unique bride or even an everyday right hand ring for the woman who needs a lift. My jewelry is meant to bring joy and comfort to those who wear. I look forward to seeing this beauty out in the world!
